Portcoast Digitalizes Transportation Infrastructure, Towards a Smart City
On September 18, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction hosted a conference on the implementation of BIM–GIS in transportation and technical infrastructure, with the participation of government leaders, experts, and enterprises. At the event, Portcoast introduced advanced solutions such as BIM–GIS, Scan to BIM, Digital Twin, and Smart City models. These technologies enhance data transparency, optimize infrastructure management, and lay the foundation for building a smart city. A notable example is Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien), where BIM–GIS has been applied to asset management, allowing synchronized updates on operation, maintenance, and equipment status. This marks an important step for Ho Chi Minh City in advancing towards comprehensive, modern, and sustainable digitalization.
On September 18, HCMC Department of Construction organized a conference on the strategy of implementing the BIM-GIS model (building information model combined with geographic information) in transportation and technical infrastructure construction.
The event gathered many management agencies, experts and businesses, aiming to find synchronized digitalization solutions for the construction industry.
HCMC aims by 2030 to complete comprehensive digital transformation in management, operation and maintenance of the transportation infrastructure system. The transportation database will be completed, integrated and connected with the sectors big data system, creating a foundation for applying modern technology in all stages - from design, construction to management.
In addition, the city will promote the application of BIM in transportation projects. At the same time, the city focuses on building a mechanism for data sharing between departments, sectors and between HCMC and the central government, ensuring smooth and transparent management.
A shared database system will be formed, including information about construction works, barriers, bridges and roads, signs, safety corridors... Traffic data will also be collected in real time through specialized equipment, supporting traffic operation and comprehensive infrastructure digitalization.
HCMC has started applying the BIM-GIS model to large-scale infrastructure projects. A typical example is Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien), which has been implemented by HCMC Urban Railway Company No.1 in cooperation with Portcoast Consultant Corporation applying BIM-GIS in infrastructure asset management.
Each device and construction item in Metro Line 1 is attached with a unique identification code, allowing full storage and updating of operational information, maintenance history and operating status.
According to experts, applying BIM-GIS for Metro Line 1 not only helps with synchronized and accurate management, but also opens up the possibility of scaling to other infrastructure projects. At that time, an integrated management system from planning, construction to operation will become reality, helping save costs, increase transparency and extend the lifespan of works.
At the conference, Portcoast introduced many solutions such as BIM-GIS, Scan to BIM, Digital Twin and smart city model. These technologies not only shorten the construction process but also support operation management in a visual and accurate way.
According to Portcoast representative, the strength of BIM-GIS is the ability to connect data with intuitive 3D images. Thanks to this, engineers and managers can quickly analyze the current status of infrastructure right on the digital platform, thereby making timely and accurate decisions in maintenance and repair.
Not only bringing technical benefits, BIM-GIS also has strategic value in urban management. When data is digitized and integrated, authorities can use it for planning, transportation development, aiming to build a smart city - where data becomes an important "digital asset".
