Portcoast Applies BIM–GIS in Transportation Infrastructure Construction
This morning, at the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, a conference was held on the plan for implementing BIM–GIS in transportation and technical infrastructure. The event brought together a large number of government leaders, experts, and enterprises in the construction and infrastructure sector. At the conference, Portcoast – Vietnam’s leading consultancy in digital transformation for transportation and infrastructure – presented advanced solutions on BIM–GIS, Scan to BIM, Digital Twin, and Smart City applications. These technologies created strong impressions, demonstrating their great potential in enhancing project management efficiency, optimizing operations, and driving comprehensive digitalization strategies in the construction and infrastructure sector. At the conference, experts and businesses introduced and analyzed the application of digitalization in implementing construction projects. The representative of Portcoast Consultant Corporation (Portcoast) introduced advanced digitalization solutions such as BIM-GIS, Scan to BIM technology, Digital Twin and smart city.
These technologies optimize the construction process and improve infrastructure management efficiency, showing potential in improving project management, optimizing operation, as well as promoting a comprehensive digitalization strategy in the field of construction and technical infrastructure.
Accordingly, the BIM-GIS model (building information model - geographic information) connects data and visualizes three-dimensional space on a digital platform. This shortens the inspection and monitoring time, makes more accurate decisions in maintenance and repair, extends the lifespan of works and minimizes waste.
Portcoast representative cited the analysis of the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, showing that BIM is a method that can save 20% of costs in procurement and operation of works.
According to a study by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (USA), accurately digitalizing underground infrastructure in highway projects helps save very large costs. Specifically, every 1 USD spent on digitalization saved 21 USD.
In Ho Chi Minh City, one of the typical projects applying the BIM-GIS model is Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien). The city is studying and applying this model for the upcoming metro lines.
