The People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City officially submitted to the Prime Minister the Can Gio International Transshipment Terminal Project
The People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has just submitted to the Prime Minister a project proposal for the construction of the Can Gio international transshipment port, with phase 1 to be exploited before 2030.

Major shipping companies look forward to investment cooperation
According to the project, the location of the Can Gio international transshipment port is in the Con Cho islet area, Thanh An commune, Can Gio district. This place is at the mouth of the Cai Mep - Thi Vai river, in the Ganh Rai Bay, near the international maritime routes passing through the South China Sea, which is advantageous for the development of an international transshipment port.
The port, being part of the Southern Key Economic Region - the most dynamic economic area of Vietnam, has many advantages in attracting goods through the port and international transshipment goods.
The Can Gio international transshipment port will become the international transshipment center of Ho Chi Minh City and the region, attracting shipping companies, transport companies, cargo owners, domestic and foreign logistics service businesses to participate in the global supply chain.
Additionally, it will attract services, trade, finance, banking, and major global insurance to set up business headquarters in the area, contributing to the formation of an international financial center in Ho Chi Minh City.
The construction of the Can Gio international transshipment port is placed within the strategy for the development of the country's maritime economy, supplementing the Cai Mep - Thi Vai port system and elevating the entire cluster of seaports number 4 into a national and international port center in the future...
Besides the strategic geographical location and favorable natural conditions, an important factor for the formation and successful development of an international transshipment port is the interest of major shipping companies in the world.
Recently, MSC (the largest shipping company in the world at present) has been very interested in exploring and wishing to participate in investment cooperation at the Can Gio international transshipment port. The world's largest shipping company's interest in investment cooperation proves the port's attractive location.
Exploiting phase 1 before 2030
Based on the demand for goods throughput, the Can Gio international transshipment port is expected to be invested in two phases.
Organize the investment, construction, and exploitation of the port in phase 1 before 2030 (investment in 2 main wharf areas out of 7 main wharf areas). Phase 2 (after 2030 - 2045) will continue to invest in completing all the remaining main wharf areas.
Regarding capital sources, the transshipment port, auxiliary facilities serving port operations, logistics service centers, and duty-free areas will be invested with funds from businesses (investors).
Meanwhile, transport infrastructure, technical infrastructure connecting to the port will be invested with state budget capital, public-private partnership (PPP) investment capital, or other legal capital sources...
Upon formation, the port will create jobs for about 6,000 - 8,000 employees, laborers at the port, and tens of thousands of workers serving logistics services, logistics centers... At the complete investment phase, the port is expected to directly contribute to the budget from 34,000 - 40,000 billion VND/year.
According to the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, the Can Gio international transshipment port will be a green port. The port development will be synchronized, modern, applying smart technology, automation in the management and operation activities; ensuring economic, social efficiency, environmental protection, especially the protection of the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve ecosystem.
Realizing the resolution on the development of Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region
The Can Gio Port has long been in the idea, planning, and throughout the strategy for the development of the maritime economy. The construction of the Can Gio transshipment port is to realize the resolutions of the Party and the State on the development of the Southeast region and Ho Chi Minh City.
Following the directions of the Prime Minister, in January 2023, the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City assigned the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport (the head of the project preparation task force) to lead and coordinate with relevant departments and units to prepare the project.
The task force also consulted with top international port construction experts, studied, and exchanged experiences on transshipment ports and customs areas in Hai Phong City.
