Two organizations in Vietnam were honored and received the Special Achievement in GIS award.
For the first time, two organizations in Vietnam, the Department of Surveying, Mapping, and Geographic Information and Portcoast Consultant Corporation, were honored and received the Special Achievement in GIS award for their outstanding achievements in implementing GIS (Geographic Information System) applications in Vietnam.
The award was presented at the 2024 Esri Global User Conference, held in July in San Diego, USA, with 18,000 in-person attendees and approximately 20,000 online participants.
The two Vietnamese organizations surpassed thousands of nominations to reach the finals and were personally selected for recognition and awarded by Mr. Jack Dangermond - President of Esri and founder of Esri.
The Department of Surveying, Mapping, and Geographic Information of Vietnam is a state organization under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, responsible for state management and public services in surveying, mapping, and geographic information. This unit is assigned by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to implement the project “Investment in building the national geographic database to serve the construction of national spatial data infrastructure and e-government”.
To date, the Department has completed the construction of the national geographic database and the establishment of the national topographic map on land, as well as the construction of the national geographic database on the Vietnamese sea to serve planning and socio-economic development.
On June 24, the Department issued a document to relevant ministries to implement the handover of the ArcGIS Desktop Advance 10.8.2 software for updating the national geographic database. This is a significant step in applying ArcGIS for the use, management, operation, and exploitation of the national geographic database in accordance with the directives of the Politburo and the Government.
Portcoast is a private company specializing in port, maritime, and inland waterway consultancy. In recent years, Portcoast has been known as a leading company in digital infrastructure transformation. For many years, this enterprise has applied modern technologies such as laser scanning, lidar, photogrammetry… to build digital models of current status, applying Building Information Modeling (BIM) for construction projects. Especially, the combination of Building Information Modeling on the GIS platform has been applied by Portcoast for projects abroad and then for projects that Portcoast consults on in Vietnam.
At the 2024 Esri Global User Conference, Portcoast received the Special Achievement Award for the project "Survey, documentation, and construction of digital models of the current status of inland waterways in Ho Chi Minh City". This is a large-scale project, covering more than 5,500 hectares of river surface area and over 10,000 hectares of land along both sides of the rivers, including 82 inland waterway routes with a total length of 522.8 km. Additionally, the entire inland waterway signaling system, 217 bridges and culverts on the route, 200 high/medium/low voltage power lines crossing the river, and 146 inland ports and wharves on the route were included.
This project also marks the first time in Vietnam that modern survey technology and digitization of inland waterway infrastructure data have been applied. The entire inland waterway system of Ho Chi Minh City, including all structures on the route and the space on both sides of the channels, has been digitized on a single, online platform, integrating Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D Geographic Information System (GIS).
According to Mr. Tran Phuc Minh Khoi, Director of Portcoast Digital Transformation Center, being honored and awarded by Esri is a great encouragement for Portcoast consultancy. This achievement not only confirms the correct direction and implementation of the Party and Government's policies on widespread application of GIS and digital technologies in Vietnam but also affirms Portcoast's technological application capabilities are on par with the world.
Esri (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.), headquartered in the USA, is a multinational company leading the global market in GIS software, location information, and mapping. Esri currently has 49 offices worldwide, including 11 research and development centers, with a total of over 6,000 employees from 73 countries.
