Two Vietnamese organizations honored for outstanding achievements in technology.

On July 20, the leadership of Portcoast Consultant Corporation (Portcoast) announced that the company was honored and received the "Special Achievement in GIS" (SAG) award at the Esri Global User Conference held in the United States.

Leading in Geographic Information System Applications

Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, General Director of Portcoast, said that the Geographic Information System (GIS) is a concept referring to an organized set, including hardware systems, computer software, geographic data, and people, designed to capture, store, update, control, analyze, and display all types of information related to geographic locations. 

GIS can display many different types of data on a map such as infrastructure, urban areas, trees... ArcGIS is one of the most powerful and popular GIS software today developed and produced by Esri.

In Vietnam, since the beginning of 2022, the Politburo has issued Resolution No. 06-NQ/TW on planning, construction, management, and sustainable development of Vietnamese urban areas by 2030, with a vision to 2045. 

The government has also issued Resolution No. 148/NQ–CP on the Action Program for planning, construction, management, and sustainable development of Vietnamese urban areas by 2030, with a vision to 2045. This resolution directs the "Development of a national database system on urban planning; widespread application of GIS and digital technologies, and digital platforms in urban planning and development management."

The integrated urban database system based on GIS is a special system designed and built to manage urban databases in the form of map layers (construction planning, technical infrastructure, housing, infrastructure works, social services...) integrated on the national geographic data platform in the national reference and coordinate system. The system will allow the display of filtered, analyzed, aggregated, and calculated information layers based on the access requirements of the system users. 

The main features of GIS include data collection, storage, querying, analysis, display, and data retrieval. Therefore, establishing an integrated urban database system based on GIS is a necessary foundation for providing the database to implement smart urban planning, smart urban management, and integrating utilities to serve residents and businesses.

Esri is the developer of the ArcGIS software suite - a comprehensive and scalable digital mapping and analysis software - the newest and most popular software in the world today. ArcGIS is considered the next-generation GIS version, modeling geographic objects and displaying data in 3D spatial format.

First-time honor, awarding to two Vietnamese organizations

The Esri Global User Conference is an annual conference organized by Esri to evaluate the effectiveness of Esri-developed software. With superior features and being the most widely used in the world today, the conference attracts tens of thousands of participants from all over the world.

The 2024 Esri Global User Conference was held in July in San Diego, USA, with 18,000 participants attending in person and about 20,000 participating online.

For the first time, two organizations from Vietnam, the Department of Surveying, Mapping, and Geographic Information of Vietnam and Portcoast Consultant Corporation (Portcoast), were honored and awarded the "Special Achievement in GIS (SAG)" award for their outstanding achievements in implementing GIS in Vietnam. 

The two Vietnamese organizations surpassed thousands of nominations to enter the finals and were personally selected for recognition and awarded by Mr. Jack Dangermond - President and founder of Esri.

The Department of Surveying, Mapping, and Geographic Information of Vietnam (Department of Surveying, Mapping, and Geographic Information - DOSM&GI) is a state organization under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

This organization performs state management on surveying, mapping, and geographic information, and provides public services in surveying, mapping, and geographic information. It is also the organization assigned by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to implement the project "Investment in building the national geographic database to serve the construction of national spatial data infrastructure and e-government".

To date, the Department has completed the construction of the national geographic database and the establishment of the national topographic map on land, as well as the construction of the national geographic database on the Vietnamese sea to serve planning and socio-economic development. 

On June 24, the Department issued a document to the relevant ministries to implement the handover of the ArcGIS Desktop Advance 10.8.2 software for updating the national geographic database. This is a significant step in applying ArcGIS for the use, management, operation, and exploitation of the national geographic database in accordance with the directives of the Politburo and the Government.
