PortCoast Consultant Corporation Utilizes UAVs for Enhanced Terrain Data Collection and Disaster Mitigation in Vietnam

In Vietnam, the modern development of geographic information systems (GIS) combined with advanced technologies such as drones equipped with technical devices can provide powerful solutions to simulate and mitigate the impacts of natural disasters, especially floods.

Mr. Tran Tan Phuc, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Portcoast Consulting Company, stated that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) equipped with high-resolution cameras using photogrammetry technology (photo measurement devices) have significantly improved terrain data collection. UAVs can map large areas with high detail, providing accurate digital surface models (DSM) and digital terrain models (DTM), which are used in disaster response and planning, particularly for floods and landslides in Vietnam.

Unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with multiple lenses allow for improved depth and color perception, facilitating more accurate terrain modeling. Photogrammetry technology transforms images taken from various angles into 3D models, which is crucial for simulating flood impacts.

There is also USV (unmanned surface vehicle) equipped with LIDAR technology systems, adding another layer of accuracy to data collection. LIDAR uses laser pulses to map the earth's surface in 3D space, creating a "point cloud" model. This allows for precise surface elevation measurements, which are crucial for predicting floodwater flow across different terrains.

Once data from UAVs, USVs, and LIDAR technology systems are collected, the next step is to simulate various flood scenarios using technology platforms like ArcGIS. ArcGIS provides advanced tools for visualizing and analyzing geographic data, creating real-time 3D models of flood-prone areas. These models help predict how water will flow through landscapes in different situations, such as varying rainfall levels, tsunamis, or dam breaks.

By running flood simulation scenarios, planners can predict how floodwaters will spread across urban and rural areas, identify high-risk zones, and develop strategies to mitigate damage caused by floods. This information is crucial for infrastructure planning, helping stakeholders design buildings, roads, and drainage systems that can withstand floods or minimize damage.

The strength of ArcGIS technology lies not only in simulating current conditions but also in forecasting future events. By integrating historical data, real-time data, and predictive models, ArcGIS technology allows planners to predict the impact of climate change and urban development on future flood risks.

Furthermore, the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with ArcGIS technology enables the simulation of new infrastructure projects in flood-prone areas. By combining detailed 3D models of buildings and infrastructure into flood simulations, planners can see how future developments will be affected by flooding. This integration is essential to ensure that new projects are designed with sustainability and resilience against future natural disasters.

In recent years, disaster management has increasingly relied on accurate geographic data for responding to and planning for natural disasters, particularly floods. Advanced devices and technologies have enabled the creation of detailed digital maps of landscapes, both on land and underwater, providing insights into flood dynamics and helping planners make informed decisions.
