Applying GIS-BIM in Construction: Seminar on Experience Sharing and Digital Innovation

On the morning of April 24, 2025, the Institute of Construction Economics organized a seminar on GIS-BIM applications to support the development and implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) platforms. The event aimed to share experiences in BIM-GIS integration as well as digital technology solutions in railway design and construction. The seminar provided a forum for sharing information and introducing technological solutions and practical experiences in the application of GIS and BIM, featuring leading experts and organizations in consulting and technology, including ESRI and PORTCOAST.

On the morning of April 24, 2025, the Institute of Construction Economics organized a seminar on GIS-BIM for the development and implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) platforms, aiming to share experiences in BIM-GIS integration as well as digital technology solutions in railway design and construction.

Attending the seminar were Mr. Nguyen Tan Vinh – Director of the Institute of Construction Economics, Mr. Nguyen Pham Quang Tu – Deputy Director, Mr. Ta Ngoc Binh – Head of Digital Construction and Investment Economics Research Department – Institute of Construction Economics, representatives from the Department of Economic and Investment Management, Vietnam Railway Authority, Directorate for Roads of Vietnam, Department of Planning – Architecture, Railway Project Management Unit, Construction Newspaper, among others.

The seminar aimed to share information and raise awareness of the roles, benefits, and requirements in implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) and its integration with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the construction sector, especially in planning, design, construction, and operation of complex infrastructure such as railways. It also introduced technological solutions and practical experiences from leading experts and consulting and technology companies such as ESRI and PORTCOAST. Additionally, it provided an open forum for discussion among managers, technical units, and enterprises about the advantages, challenges, and proposed solutions to effectively promote GIS-BIM applications in Vietnam, contributing to the successful implementation of the tasks assigned under Project 926.

At the seminar, the Institute of Construction Economics also introduced its assigned digital transformation tasks under Decision 926 and the role of GIS-BIM. In 2025, the Institute will implement a BIM platform in the management of construction planning, construction according to planning, and urban technical infrastructure management nationwide; research, develop, and update guidelines on applying BIM in construction activities. ESRI shared its insights on digital transformation in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) consultancy using GIS, implementation models, applications of BIM/GIS in railway projects, and technological innovations. In addition, Portcoast (Consulting Company for Port and Coastal Engineering) presented its experience in BIM-GIS integration and digital technologies serving railway infrastructure digital transformation.

The seminar took place in an open and engaging atmosphere, with extensive discussions on the opportunities, challenges, and proposed solutions to advance the effective application of GIS-BIM in Vietnam in the near future.
