Some advanced softwares and equipment & technologies are now being used in Portcoast Consultant Corporation and the first ones to be applied to the survey, design and consultancy for transport works in Vietnam.

PORTCOAST has been using and has the licenses of using the modern international software as the following:



GEO5 is a software suite, providing solution for majority of Geotechnical tasks. Individual programs have the same user interface and communicate with each other, while each program verifies definite structure type.
Portcoast now have full license of Geo5 Package Basic with multi-tools for Geotechnical Design:

PLAXIS V 8 is a finite element package intended for the two dimensional analysis of deformation and stability in geotechnical engineering.

PLAXIS FLOW is a finite element package intended for the two-dimensional and staeady-state analyses of saturated and unsaturated groundwater flow problems in geotechnical engineering and hydrology.

PLAXIS 3D FOUNDATION is a three-dimensional finite element program especially developed for the analysis of foundation structures, including off-shore foundations. It combines simple graphical input procedures, which allow the user to automatically generate complex finite element models, with advanced output facilities and robust calculation procedures. The program is designed such that a user can analysis complex constructions after only a few hours of training.

PLAXIS 3D TUNNEL is a finite element package that has been developed specifically for the analysis of deformation and stability in tunnel projects. The simple graphical input procedures enable a quick generation of complex finite element models, and the enhanced output facilities provide a detailed presentation of computational results. The calculation itself is fully automated and based on robust numerical procedures. This concept enables new users to work with the package after only a few hours of training.


GeoStudio applications can be used to model almost any geotechnical problem including:


SLOPE/W is a software product that uses limit equilibrium theory to compute the factor of safety of earth and rock slopes. The comprehensive formulation of SLOPE/W makes it possible to easily analyze both simple and complex slope stability problems using a variety of methods to calculate the factor of safety. It has application in the analysis and design for geotechnical, civil, and mining engineering projects.


SEEP/W is a finite element software product that  be used to analyze the seepage problems and dissipation of excess pore-water pressures resulting from changes in stress conditions. The term seepage is used to describe all movement of water through soil regardless of the creation or source of the driving force or whether the flow is through saturated or unsaturated soils.


SIGMA/W is a finite element software product that can be used to perform stress and deformation analyses of earth structures. Its comprehensive formulation makes it possible to analyze both simple and highly complex problems.


TEMP/W is a finite element software product that can be used to model the thermal changes in the ground due to environmental changes, or due to the  construction of facilities, such as buildings or pipelines. The comprehensive formulation makes it possible to analyze both simple and highly complex geothermal problems, with or without temperatures that result in freezing or thawing of soil moisture.


QUAKE/W is a geotechnical finite element software product used for the dynamic analysis of earth structures subjected to earthquake shaking and other sudden impact loading such as, for example, dynamiting or pile driving.


CTRAN/W is a finite element software product that can be used to model the movement of contaminants through porous materials such as soil and rock. The comprehensive formulation of  CTRAN/W makes it possible to analyze problems varying from simple particle tracking in response to the movement of water, to complex processes involving diffusion, dispersion, adsorption, radioactive decay and density dependencies.


VADOSE/W is a finite element software product that determines the moisture and heat stress states at the ground surface with climate conditions present above the ground surface, so it can account for all of these physical processes based on first principle physics. For this reason, VADOSE/W can be used to design single or multi layered soil covers over mine waste and municipal landfill disposal sites; obtain climate controlled soil pore pressures on natural slopes or man  make covered slopes for use in stability analysis; determine infiltration and evaporation and plant transpiration from agricultural irrigation projects etc. It can be used wherever accurate surface boundary conditions are required.


AIR/W is a module that runs inside the SEEP/W program where it solves for air pressure and flow in response to pressure boundary conditions or changes in water pressure. If coupled with TEMP/W, then AIR/W also solves for thermally induced density dependent air movement and pressure changes.

In Geo-Studio system, result from one model can be used in other model.


Professional DHI Software tools made by Danish Hydraulic Institute compose as the following:

·    MIKE 11 Enterprise includes HD-Hydrodynamics, RR–Rainfall-Runoff, SO-Structure Operation, DB-Dam Break and AD-Advection-Dispersion. MIKE 11 is the industry standard for simulating flow, water quality and sediment transport in estuaries, rivers, irrigation canals and other surface water bodies in many regions. It provides a wealth of capabilities that span the entire range of applications from basic routing to complex, fully dynamic modeling and complete facilities for fast and convenient definition of dam geometry, breach development in time and space as well as failure mode.


·   MIKE 21 (HD, AD, SA, MT, PT, ST,EMS, BW, NSW, SW, ECOLAB, MARINE PP, MIKE ANIMATOR) is a professional engineering software package for the simulation of flows, waves, sediments and ecology in rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays, coastal areas and seas. MIKE 21 provides a complete and effective design environment for engineering, coastal management and planning applications.


•    MIKE 21 MA: The software is capable of accurately calculating ship movements and other floating structures anchored at sea and in port, as well as anchor forces at anchor anchor points. For ports, port operators or oil companies, it is possible to more accurately estimate the time the port stops operating and improve the safety of fishing operations.

·    MIKE 3 (PP, HD, MT) is a professional engineering software package for 3D free-surface flows. It is applicable to simulations of flows, cohesive sediments, water quality and ecology in rivers, lakes, estuaries, bays, coastal areas and seas. MIKE 3 forms a unique professional software tool for consultancy services related to design, operation and maintenance tasks within the aquatic environment. MIKE 3 is the result of 20 years of continuous development and is tuned through the experience gained from hundreds of applications worldwide.

SHIPMA is a program for simulating the manoeuvring behaviour of ships, taking into account the influences of:
- The ship's manoeuvring characteristics,
- The kind of manoeuvre and desired track,
- Rudder and engine actions,
- Tug assistance,
- Wind, waves and currents,
- Shallow water and
- Bank suction.

Rudder, engine and tug(s) are controlled by a combination of:
- A track keeping autopilot and tug controller,
- Input data as defined by the user.

The autopilot responds to deviations from the desired track and course angle. In the case of curved tracks and changes in the current-pattern, the autopilot will anticipate on these changes, while taking into account a user-defined "anticipation distance".

SHIPMA computes the track and course angles of the ship, the required actions for the rudder, the engine and the tugs, on time-step basis during the manoeuvre. All forces acting on the ship and the speeds, rotations and accelerations of the ship will be determined as well, and stored in output files. In addition, the actual water depths, current velocities, wind speeds, wave heights, tug orders, tug forces and so on, are calculated.

HYPACK® MAX is software for Hydrographic Data Collection, Processing and Final Products.

 Flycam/drone devices
DJI from the US is one of leading company in manufacturing the newest and most modern unmanned aerial devices. Flycams/drones of DJI is integrated a professional 4K camera with high resolution up to 20 megapixel, and satellite positioning systems (GPS and GLONASS) increasing spatial resolution and accuracy of orthomosaic images.

Flycams/Drones of DJI take off vertically and are suitable for taking off at any complex terrain with velocity of 15m/s improving productivity of work. Each device can survey about 300 ha per day in good weather condition.

Nortek AWAC is a revolutionary instrument that gives you both a current profiler and a wave directional system in one unit. You can measure the current speed and direction in 1-m thick layers from the bottom to the surface and you can measure long waves, storm waves, short wind waves, or transient waves generated by local ship traffic.

Odom ES3-M is the echo sonar multibeam which integrates the best features of products from two industry leaders in one compact package. In the ES3-M Odom Hydrographic's paradigm changing ES3 multibeam sonar is united with Teledyne TSS's survey proven DMS line of motion sensors. The two companies technical cooperation has resulted in a system with virtually zero fixed offsets (rollandpitch) between the two central components of a Hydrographic Multibeam System. EdgeTech 4200-MP Side Scan Sonar System provides a unique advantage over conventional dual frequency side scan systems by combining EdgeTech’s Full Spectrum and Multi-Pulse technologies into one unit. Providing high resolution images of seabed in oceans, lakes and rivers. The 4200-MP comes available with a choice of two dual simultaneous frequency sets; either 100/400 kHz or 300/600 kHz, and offers two software selectable modes of operation:

The DMS range of motion sensors is designed specifically for the motion measurement needs of the marine industry.
The DMS provides accurate motion measurement in all sea conditions. Incorporating an enhanced external velocity and heading aiding algorithm for improved accuracy during dynamic manoeuvres, the solid state angular rate sensors offer reliability in the highest performing vertical reference unit.
The DMS is rated to 3000m as standard with 6000m available on request. The sensor can be supplied in various configurations for integration with towed vehicles and other applications. As with all TSS system, the DMS is certified to meet all current and anticipated European legislation for electromagnetic compatibility and electronic emissions.

Three different sizes for measurements of torvane strength with be carried out for every undisturbed sample. This test is carried out with such a rate of rotation that take 5 to 10 seconds to failure.





CPTu testing (More than 17,000m length done for Saigon East West Highway Project)





Seismic down-hole test is limited to the determination of interval velocities from arrival times and relative arrival times of compression wave (P) and vertically (SV) and horizontally (SH) polarized shear (S) seismic waves which are generated near surface and travel down to seismic sensors vertically installed in borehole (PVC pipes are be installed inside the borehole used for the tests).

A reffered method intended to obtain data for use on critical projects where the highest quality data is required is included.
Equipment for seismic down-hole test includes: Seismographs StrataVisor NZII - 48 channels and Geode, ver.9.14 - 24 channels; BHG-3 receiver and BHGC-1B controller; Hammer using to provide pulses of energy which generate seismic waves traveling through environment of the earth.


When elastic wave radiating from a source of energy (by hammer), it continues to transmit into the underground and come to the geological boundaries, then will happen two different phenomena: reflected and refracted phenomena. Seismic refraction method to observe the phenomenon of propagation of the refracted waves to determine the parameters of the geological layers.
The seismic refraction is used to map geologic conditions including depth to bedrock, or to water table, stratigraphy, lithology, structure and fractures or all of these. The calculated seismic wave velocity is related to mechanical properties. Therefore, characterization of the material (Type of rock, degree of weathering...) is made on the basis of seismic velocity and other geologic information.
Equipment for seismic refraction test includes: Seismographs StrataVisor NZII - 48 channels and Geode, ver.9.14 - 24 channels; Geophones SN-10V; Hammer using to provide pulses of energy which generate seismic waves traveling through environment of the earth.


The Pile Driving Analyzer technology applies dynamic measurements to solve pilling problems. Force and accelerations measurements taken near the top of a pile during impact provide the necessary information for determining:

Apparatus of the lab is enough for testing 30 specimens
60 Sedimentation Cylinders.
The Atterberg limits are water contents which define the limits of various stages of consistency for fine-grained soils. Test shall be performed in accordance with ASTM D 4318. All devices made by HUMBOLDT (USA).
All of balances are connected to PC to record the weight of samples.


The laboratory is equiped with 48 set chanels data acquistion system for recording all types of strength and deformation test for soil and rock.


The direct shear test is used to measure the shear strength of a soil under drained conditions. The apparatus should consist of the following: shear box, porous stones, loading devices, dial indicators and other items ... made in Chinese (NTY). Tests shall be performed in accordance with ASTM D 3080 for determining the angle of the Internal friction and the cohesion intercept.



a. Odometer test (30 sets), American equipment (HUMBOLDT Company) encloses data acquisition system to record. The system allow to test up to the load of 64Kg/cm2. THE ODOMETER EQUIPMENT WITH THE DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM TO RECORD DATA Conmatic consolidation test by Humboldt controlled by pneumatic which allow to apply instantaneous loading without impact. Test can be done up to 32Kg/cm2.
c. CRS consolidation equipment (Geocomp Co. - 5 sets) operate according to Specification ASTM D-4186. This system combined with the computer via network card control the pressure of cell and sample, and then the test can be controlled automatically from start to finish.
With consolidation equipment CRS, consolidation compression test obtain result in just a day instead of a week when testing with common classic equipments.


Triaxial compression test kit of Geocomp (USA) with the most advanced operation principal of the world, enables test steps (including saturating, consolidating and shearing sample) to be fully automated after input initial parameters of consolidation pressure as well as application process (ASTM, BS,...)
Triaxial compression test kit also enables to perform stress-path test to imitate process of stress change and soil deformation according to construction stage at site.

Versatile Fully Automated geotechnical equipment runt tests form start to finish, including final report.



The Chemical Test consist of following tests:
Carbonate content in soil or rock. Test is performed in accordance with ASTM D 4373
Chemical testing for soil and ground water as follows: Sulphate content, Chlorine content, gypsum content, total dissolved salts. All test are performed in accordance with BS 1377 part 3.


The Point Load Test is a fast and convenient way to determine the strength and fracture toughness of rock. In a Point Load Test, a sample of rock is mounted between two pointed platens and pressure is applied until failure of the sample occurs. The peak applied load is recorded and used to calculate the Point Load Index. Tests are performed in accordance with ASTM D 5731.


A system: Electric Hydraulic Compression Testing Machine, TYA-2000, Loadcell, and position transducer.
Maximum load: 200 tons.
- Measure unconfined compressive strength of core rock and other materials with measurement of load and displacement
- Measure strength of core rock (c,φ) by the direct shear test for intact rock core sample by compression in beveled dies.
