Vietnam attended the 28th regular conference of the IMO Assembly

The 28th regular conference of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly – the highest executive office of the Organization – was opened on 25/11/2013 at IMO headquarters in London, United Kingdom with attendance from 170 official member nations and 03 associate members, along with relevant internationl governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations.

The Assembly’s regular conference is usually held every 2 years and is responsible for reviewing the implementation of the last term of 2 years in the areas of safety, maritime security, protection of the marine environment, reduction of greenhouse emissions and creating favorable conditions for maritime traffic; approval of plans through the operating budget of the Organization for the next term of 2 years. In addition, the conference will also conduct election of 40 Board members of group A, B, C of the Organization.

Having joined the Vietnam’s party led by Deputy Minister of Transport – Mr. Nguyen Van Cong were representatives from the Ministry of Finanace, the departments and ministries of the Northern and Southern Vietnam Maritime Safety Corporation, and Portcoast Consultant Corporation.

At the conference opening, on behalf of the Vietnam’s party, Deputy Minister – Mr. Nguyen Van Cong had a speech before the conference regarding issues in which has caught the attention of the maritime community such as maritime safety and security, protection of maritime environment, climate change and rise of sea level, voluntary assessment program of IMO conventions, as well as participation and effective implementation for the international conventions of the International Maritime Organization and the International Labor Organization. Vietnam is willing to commit to coordinate with IMO’s associate members to implement measures to meet the requirements and objectives of IMO for the aforesaid areas of interest.

The conference will continue until 04/12/2013.
