Kicking off Van Phong international transit port: A focus in the national sea strategy

(SGGP).- By the end of October, the first two jetties of Van Phong international transit port project have been commenced at Dam Mon, the West of Hon Gom peninsula (Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province). This is a focal work in Vietnam’s sea port development strategy, opening up major opportunities for the economic development in Khanh Hoa province in particular and neighboring areas in general. The Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended and launched the construction commencement.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung highlights that Van Phong international transit port is the national focal work. The project, after coming into operation, will strongly promote the economic development in Khanh Hoa province and neighboring areas as well as create favorable conditions for Vietnam’s sea port development strategy. The Prime Minister asks for the close coordination between the project owner and local authority as to accomplish the construction plan of Van Phong transit port for the purpose of its early operation and effectiveness.

Under the overall planning of Vietnam’s sea port system by 2020, Van Phong gulf is unique as it to be an international transit port and a focus in the national sea strategy. This is the deep-water port No 1 in the area, having the major advantage in the ability of freeing from storm and monsoon avoidance. The access channel to the port is at a depth of over 22m on average and nearly 40m at some points, getting stable at any time and free from the sedimentation and hereby taking no costs in the channel dredging.

Upon the development planning, Van Phong international transit port covers 04 phases. The first phase will see the construction of 02 jetties with a total length of 690m and 41,5 hectares, which can accommodate Post Panamax container vessel with a capacity of 9.000 TEUs, satisfying the throughput of 1,05 -2,1 million TEUs/year.

In the phase 1 (2010-2015), the port consists of 04 berths for container vessels with a capacity of 9.000 TEUs and 05 berths for small ships, handling the throughput of 1,05 – 2,1 million TEUs/year, covering 118 – 125 hectares total and winning approximately 1.700 – 2.260m in total length.

The project owner is Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines), who has signed an agreement in port and logistics investment with Maersk Group (Denmark) and a strategic cooperation agreement with SSA Group (U.S), etc.
